Apa itu Simple Past Tense?
Simple past tense adalah tenses bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang terjadi dan telah berakhir di masa lampau. Sering dikira sama, simple past tense berbeda dengan past continuous tense. Sebab, past continuous tense menjelaskan kejadian di masa lampau yang masih berlangsung di masa sekarang.
Rumus Simple Past Tense
Ada beberapa rumus yang digunakan untuk membentuk kalimat simple past tense, diantaranya:
1. Rumus Simple Past Tense Affirmative (Bentuk Positif)
Rumus Verbal Positive Simple Past Tense
Subject + Verb 2 + Complement
Rumus Nominal Positive Simple Past Tense
Subject + to be (was/were) + Complement
Simple past tense identik dengan verb 2 atau kata kerja kedua. Ada dua bentuk kata kerja kedua yang digunakan yaitu bentuk regular verb dan irregular verb. Berikut perbedaannya:
Regular verb adalah kata kerja yang menggunakan -ed/d di akhir kata kerja pertama (verb 1). Contoh regular verb: proved, moved, jumped, walked, dan laughed.
Irregular verb adalah kata kerja yang pola kata dasarnya berubah bila diberikan konjugasi. Berikut contoh dari irregular verb: began, caught, wrote, took, dan did.

Berikut adalah contoh kalimat simple past tense bentuk positif:
- Lizzie won the best writer last year.
(Lizzie memenangkan penulis terbaik tahun lalu.) - Rudy went to Jakarta yesterday for a job interview.
(Rudy pergi ke Jakarta kemarin untuk wawancara kerja.) - We moved to Bali.
(Kami pindah ke Bali.) - They were happy to have chicken for dinner.
(Mereka senang makan ayam untuk makan malam.) - I was in Tokyo last week.
(Aku berada di Tokyo minggu kemarin.)
2. Rumus Simple Past Tense Bentuk Negatif
Untuk membentuk kalimat negatif simple past tense, gunakan rumus di bawah ini:

Subject + did + not + Verb 1
Rumus Nominal Negative Simple Past Tense
Subject + to be (was/were) + not
