Bawang Merah Bawang Putih (Shallot and Garlic)

Long time ago, there were two half-sisters, Bawang Merah (Shallot) and Bawang Putih (Garlic). Bawang Merah was a lazy, greedy girl who was spoiled by her mother, while Bawang Putih was obedient, diligent, and did all the chores without complaint. 

One day, Bawang Putih lost Bawang Merah’s scarf in the river while washing it. An old woman found the scarf and offered to return it if Bawang Putih would cook and clean for her. Bawang Putih agreed, and the old woman turned out to be a fairy godmother. She gave Bawang Putih a magical pumpkin that was filled with gold and riches. 

Out of jealousy, Bawang Merah wanted the same fortune for herself. She purposely dropped her scarf into the river, hoping to meet the old woman. When she did encounter the old woman, she demanded a bigger reward and refused to help with the chores. The old woman granted Bawang Merah’s request, but it turned out to be filled with poisonous snakes instead of gold. 

Moral of the story: 

  • Good will always triumph over evil
  • Be kind to others
  • Hard work and determination will eventually pay off
  • Don’t be greedy.

Malin Kundang

Malin Kundang was a poor boy who lived with his mother on the coast of Sumatra. One day, a ship came to the village, and Malin Kundang was offered a job as a sailor. He promised his mother he would return one day, but he never did. Instead, he became a wealthy merchant and married a beautiful woman. 

When he returned to his village, his mother did not recognize him at first. When she did, she was overjoyed and ran to embrace him. Malin Kundang, however, was ashamed of his poor mother and refused to acknowledge her. He told her to go away, and she was so heartbroken that she cursed him. Malin Kundang was immediately turned into a stone statue. 

Moral of the story: 

  • Be grateful to your parents
  • Don’t be arrogant.

Timun Mas (Golden Cucumber)

Once upon a time, in a distant village, a widow made a desperate agreement with a giant named Buto Ijo. The giant gave the widow a cucumber seed that could grow into a child, but he would take her back when the child reached the age of 16. Eager to have a child, the widow agreed and planted the seed as soon as she arrived home. After a while, a huge golden cucumber sprouted from it, and when she cut it, she found a beautiful baby girl inside. She named her Timun Mas, and the girl grew up to be a sweet and lovely young lady. 

As Timun Mas approached her 16th birthday, Buto Ijo came to the village to take her back. Upon hearing of this, Timun Mas became frightened, but she was determined to protect herself. With the help of a wise old man, Timun Mas used salt to create an ocean, nails to form a thorny forest, and magical cucumber seeds to erect an impenetrable wall, successfully thwarting the giant. The giant was eventually defeated, and Timun Mas lived happily ever after with her mother. 

Moral of the story: The importance of determination, resourcefulness, and bravery.

Sangkuriang

Once upon a time in the land of Sundanese, there lived a young and handsome man named Sangkuriang. He fell in love with a woman, unaware she was his own mother, Dayang Sumbi. When Dayang Sumbi realized the truth, she set an impossible challenge for Sangkuriang to build a dam and a boat overnight.

With supernatural help, Sangkuriang almost completed the task, but Dayang Sumbi tricked him into thinking he had failed. Sangkuriang became enraged and destroyed the dam, forming the Citarum River, and kicked the boat into Mount Tangkuban Perahu. Heartbroken, they parted ways, and Dayang Sumbi transformed into Lutung Kasarung, a white monkey. 

Moral of the story: The consequences of forbidden love, pride, and disobedience.

Long time ago, a prince of Kediri met Klenting Kuning, the adopted daughter of a poor widow Mbok Radha who was actually a princess of Jenggala. They met and fell in love, but due to the conflict between the two kingdoms, they never saw each other again. Years later, the prince disguised himself as Ande Ande Lumut and announced that he was looking for a bride. 

The four daughters of Mbok Randha were eager to marry Ande Ande Lumut. However, he only chose the youngest daughter, Klenting Kuning, because she was the only one who had not kissed the giant crab Yuyu Kangkang. At the time, the prince recognized Klenting Kuning as the girl he had fallen in love with back then, and so did Klenting Kuning. They eventually married and reunited the two kingdoms. 

Moral of the story: The values of kindness, humility, and empathy.

Jaka Tarub

Jaka Tarub was a handsome young man who lived in a small village. While he was hunting in the forest, he came across a beautiful woman bathing in a pond. The woman was actually an angel named Nawang Wulan, who had come down to earth to take a bath. Jaka Tarub was immediately smitten with Nawang Wulan, and he stole her shawl while she was bathing. When Nawang Wulan realized that her shawl was missing, she could not return to heaven. Jaka Tarub married her and promised that he would not ask her about her secret. 

As a wife, Nawang Wulan was good at cooking and had the ability to turn a single grain of rice into a basket of rice. Jaka Tarub never asked, but one day, while Nawang Wulan was cooking, his curiosity led him to open the pot, and the magic was gone. Nawang Wulan was angry, but then she discovered her shawl, which had been hidden by Jaka Tarub, and became much angrier. She returned to heaven, leaving Jaka Tarub and their children behind. 

Moral of the story:

  • Respect the natural world and the supernatural
  • Curiosity can be dangerous.

Roro Jonggrang 

Roro Jonggrang was the beautiful and talented daughter of Prabu Boko, the king of the Pengging kingdom. One day, Prabu Boko was attacked by the powerful giant Bandung Bondowoso and killed. Bandung Bondowoso then took Roro Jonggrang and demanded her to marry him. 

Roro Jonggrang was horrified by the thought of marrying a giant, so she devised a plan to trick him. She told Bandung Bondowoso that she would marry him if he could build 1000 temples in one night. Bandung Bondowoso agreed, and he began to build the temples with the help of his magical powers.

Roro Jonggrang was worried that Bandung Bondowoso would succeed, so she asked her maidservants to help her. The maidservants began to pound rice at midnight, making a loud noise that sounded like the morning already came. When Bandung Bondowoso saw that the temples were not finished and the morning already came, he was furious. He cursed Roro Jonggrang, turning her into a statue to complete the 1000 temples. 

Moral of the story: Be clever and resourceful. 

Si Kancil dan Buaya (The Mouse Deer and The Crocodiles)

Once upon a time, there was a clever mouse deer named Si Kancil. He lived in a forest with many other animals, including the crocodiles that would often eat the other animals. One day, Si Kancil wanted to cross a river infested with crocodiles. Aware of the danger, Si Kancil needed to find a way to cross the river safely. He devised a plan to outwit the crocodiles and reach the other side.

Si Kancil tricked the crocodiles by telling them about a king’s party where he needed to count their family members. He hopped onto the back of each crocodile, secretly guiding them across the river while pretending to count. As he reached the last crocodile, Si Kancil exclaimed that one was missing, causing confusion among the crocodiles. Si Kancil quickly escaped to the other side, outsmarting the crocodiles.

Moral of the story: Be smart and use your wit to overcome challenges.
